Thrissur's Terracotta Legacy

Long before concrete arrived in Kerala, Thrissur's clay shaped every roof, every wall, every vessel. A tradition 2,000 years old — still alive in Ollur.

🏛️Before 100 CE

Clay as the First Building Material

The river plains of Thrissur — fed by the Bharathapuzha — yielded alluvial clay of rare density and plasticity. Kerala's earliest settlers fired this clay into storage vessels, lamps, and roof coverings long before any formal trade existed.

🏠Medieval Period

The Rise of the Nalukettu Tradition

Traditional Kerala homes — the nalukettu and tharavadu — were roofed exclusively with clay tiles. Thrissur potters supplied the entire Malabar coast. The distinctive red-brown tile became inseparable from Kerala's skyline and identity.

⚱️1800s – Colonial Era

Organised Pottery Guilds of Thrissur

Under British administration, Thrissur's potters formalised into guilds. Ollur and nearby villages became hubs for kiln-fired roof tiles exported to Kochi, Kozhikode, and Palakkad. The craft reached peak output, sustaining entire village economies.

🏺1965

Cornation Clay is Founded

In the heart of Ollur, Cornation Clay was established — carrying forward the ancient tradition with modern discipline. Kiln temperatures standardised, tile dimensions unified, and quality controls introduced. The same Thrissur clay, now shaped with greater precision.

🔥1980s – 2000s

Surviving the Concrete Age

As cement tiles flooded the market, most Thrissur kilns shut down. Cornation Clay held its ground — serving architects and homeowners who understood that no factory tile matches the thermal insulation and longevity of fired terracotta.

Today

The Heritage Revival

Architects across Kerala are returning to terracotta — for sustainability, aesthetics, and thermal performance. Cornation Clay now supplies roof tiles, jali panels, bricks, and custom decor to projects from Thrissur to Bengaluru, continuing a craft that has outlasted every trend.

“Thrissur clay does not just build homes — it remembers them.”
