How to Calculate Roof Tiles — The Complete Kerala Home Guide

The Basic Formula

Tiles needed = Roof area (sq ft) × Coverage factor × 1.10 (wastage)

Step 1: Measure Your Roof Area

For a simple pitched roof:
Ground floor plan area × slope factor

• Shallow slope (15–22°): × 1.05
• Standard slope (22–30°): × 1.15
• Steep slope (30–45°): × 1.25

Example: A Kerala home with a 1200 sqft footprint and standard 25° roof slope:
Roof area = 1200 × 1.15 = 1380 sqft

Step 2: Calculate Tile Quantity

Using DG Roof Tile (most popular):
1380 sqft × 1.15 (coverage) × 1.10 (wastage) = 1744 tiles

Step 3: Ridge and Valley Tiles

These are sold per running foot (length of ridge line), not per sqft.

• Ridge tiles: 80 pieces per running foot of ridge length
• Valley tiles: 80 pieces per running foot of valley length

Measure the length of your roof ridge and multiply by 80.

Real Example: Kerala 3-bedroom Home

House footprint: 45 ft × 35 ft = 1575 sqft
Roof type: Hip roof with 4 slopes
Slope: 30°, factor 1.20
Ridge length: 30 ft

Calculation:
Roof area = 1575 × 1.20 = 1890 sqft
DG Tiles = 1890 × 1.15 × 1.10 = 2389 tiles
Ridge tiles = 30 ft × 80 = 2400 pieces

Why Add 10% Wastage?

• Cutting at roof edges and hips
• Breakage during transport and installation
• Future repair spares (matching the original batch)
• Installer errors and rework
